Faculty Profiles

Professor Aya Shiroi

Professor Aya Shiroi is an animation artist whose work spans a wide range of media, including music videos, television folktale programs, children's television productions, and commercial advertising. Her practice explores visual storytelling through animation and contemporary media, with a particular focus on narrative, culture, and communication.

Matthew Phinn

Matthew Phinn is a painter who has worked as an independent artist for over twenty years, exhibiting extensively in both the United Kingdom and Japan. His work explores landscape, memory, and cultural identity through painting and drawing. In 2025, he joined Hiroshima City University as a lecturer in the Oil Painting Department.

Workshop Overview

Visual Narratives and Cultural Identity: Exploring the Japanese Handscroll (Emaki)

This workshop introduces participants to the Japanese emaki (handscroll), a traditional art form that combines image and narrative within a continuous visual format. Historically, handscrolls have been used to tell stories, document events, and convey cultural values through the unfolding relationship between text and image.

Working collaboratively, participants will create a large-scale contemporary handscroll that reflects their own experiences, observations, and cultural perspectives. Through drawing, painting, collage, photography, and mixed-media experimentation, students will explore themes of cultural identity, place, daily life, and personal narrative.

The workshop encourages creative exchange between Japanese and German students, providing opportunities for intercultural dialogue through visual art. By bringing together diverse artistic approaches and perspectives, participants will contribute to a shared artwork that celebrates both individual expression and collaborative creativity.

No prior knowledge of Japanese art traditions is required. The workshop is designed to be accessible to students from a wide range of artistic backgrounds and disciplines.

Visual Narratives and Cultural Identity: Exploring the Japanese Handscroll (Emaki)
This workshop introduces participants to the Japanese emaki (handscroll), a traditional format that combines image and narrative in a continuous visual journey. Working collaboratively, participants will create a large-scale contemporary scroll exploring themes of cultural identity, place, and everyday life.

Using drawing, painting, collage, photography, and mixed media, students will share perspectives, experiment with materials, and engage in intercultural dialogue through visual storytelling.

Day 1
Welcome and introductions
Lecture by Professor Aya Shiroi: The Origins of Japanese Manga and Visual Narrative
Lecture by Matthew Phinn: Japanese and European Approaches to Space and Composition
Discussion of workshop themes
Material gathering and project planning

Day 2
Collaborative scroll production
Drawing, painting, collage, photography, and mixed-media experimentation
Group discussion and development

Day 3
Final production and refinement
Integration of sections into a unified scroll
Installation and presentation
Group reflection and discussion

Materials to Prepare Before the Workshop
For this workshop, participants are asked to bring a selection of materials that reflect their culture, daily life, interests, or personal experiences. As the final scroll will combine drawing, painting, collage, and found materials, a broad range of items is encouraged. Examples include:
Photographs (printed or photocopied)
Magazine and newspaper clippings
Packaging, labels, tickets, receipts, and postcards
Maps, brochures, and travel materials
Handwritten notes, poems, or short texts
Fabric, textiles, ribbons, or other decorative materials
Sketches, drawings, and visual research
Found objects or ephemera that can be attached to paper
Images related to daily life, food, nature, architecture, music, or popular culture

Note: Materials should be lightweight and relatively flat so that they can be easily attached to the scroll.

Folgende Regeln gelten für die Anmeldung:
  • Die Anmeldung zu maximal 1 Veranstaltungen des Anmeldesets ist erlaubt.
  • Folgende Bedingung muss zur Anmeldung erfüllt sein:
    Studienfach ist nicht Information und Kommunikation und Fachsemester mindestens 3
  • Folgende Personenkreise werden bei der Platzverteilung bevorzugt:
    • Fachsemester mindestens 7 (671 Personen)
  • Eine Anmeldung ist erst nach Akzeptieren der Teilnahmebedingungen möglich:
    Es ist NICHT möglich, sich direkt in die Veranstaltungen einzutragen! Bitte gebt daher unbedingt eine Rangfolge eurer 10 Wunschkurse an, damit ihr auch bei stark nachgefragten Kurskombinationen berücksichtigt werdet.
  • Es wird eine festgelegte Anzahl von Plätzen in den Veranstaltungen verteilt.
    Die Plätze in den betreffenden Veranstaltungen werden am 29.09.2026 um 12:00 verteilt.
  • Die Anmeldung ist möglich von 01.09.2026, 10:00 bis 23.09.2026, 16:00.
