Seal Engraving – Making TENKOKU

Prof. Kouki Tsuritani

Kooperation mit der Hiroshima City University (HCU) | Faculty of Arts

HsH students will be introduced to seal engraving called Tenkok, a type of print expression. While the culture of signing important documents is still alive in the West, the custom of using a seal has been rooted in Japan and other Eastern countries since ancient times. Prof. Tsuritani, who teaches printmaking at HCU, will hold a workshop on making a seal as a way of introducing the Japanese culture associated with print expression.
Specifically, he plans to conduct a workshop on making TENKOK, which is a relatively simple technique. After a brief introduction and demonstration at the beginning, the students will choose one or more Chinese characters (Kanji) in seal script related to their names to introduce themselves.  Together with the accompanying Japanese student, all participating students will discuss the meaning of the kanji and decide which kanji is more appropriate for their names. At this stage it is good to convey not only the meaning of the kanji, but also some nuances of how the Japanese consider the letters. After this, each student will engrave their own name in Kanji and on the last day the students will stamp it on Japanese paper to complete the work. If some students finish early, they are encouraged to carve the handles as well. If possible, please bring a magnifying glass with you so that you can better recognise and design the fine details of your work.
